So this was how it happened!

Gail watched the tall figure until it had passed out of her sight and wandered into the shadows of her apartment. This was the magic alchemy that quickened perception, sharpened every sense to new acute awareness, brought an unbelievable joy in merely being alive and a breathless, almost unbearable suspense of anticipation that waited on the next meeting with…

Max … She whispered the name aloud, her eyes puzzled and not a little curious. It was so short a name, a careless kind of name, one she would have said she didn’t particularly care for if she had been asked to opine on favourite male names. But now it wasn’t a name, it was a person who could make it into something special, one certain man who in the space of a few moments had become a part of her existence … a part she couldn’t visualize being without.

But why? How? Why at that particular moment? Why her? Why

him? Nothing had happened. She hadn’t been drawn to him at first meeting. Secretly, though she’d have died rather than admit it, she’d been a little scared of him those first few days, instinctively knowing that authority-wise he was a different proposition altogether from her own easy-going crowd. He’d never singled her out, never flirted, encouraged, teased, even touched her. On the contrary, until die last couple of days he’d given a distinct impression of regarding her as a baggage he’d have travelled more happily without. So why this catastrophic effect?

She tried to open her pack and discovered that during the past few moments of intense thought she had undone all the buckles and then fastened them again. Heavens! Had she tossed off all that side-chat about slave girls, and flipped that whisk over his face, and pranced about like an idiot? An amateur fan- dancer ! She’d subconsciously tried to flirt with him, because it was in her heart without her knowing …

Slowly she began to take her things out of the pack, spreading them over the divan and shifting them from one place to another with aimless movements while the warm colour heated her face and she wondered if he liked her more now than when he first gave his disapproving verdict. How did a girl tell if a man liked her? What were the signs—beyond the blatant passes some men made, passes they would make at anything that was female and reasonably attractive? Gail sat down and experienced the sudden plummeting of the spirits that was to become frequent and very familiar very soon.

There just weren’t any indications she could think of that showed Max noticed her as feminine and—well, not completely unattractive and—and a girl who waited for and longed for love as much as any other girl.

Coming at last to the item she sought, the little waterproof pack that held her toiletries and personal treasures, she tried to remember why she wanted it at this very moment. Oh yes … she wanted to give Aumya some small token.
